Añelo activated an emergency operation after intense storm flooding streets and homes
Defensa Civil assisted 25 families and evacuated two people after runoff from the hills damaged infrastructure and obstructed several routes. The community hall remains open as a refuge and assistance center.
I was walking through the streets of Añelo on Thursday morning when I noticed how the storm had changed the daily rhythm of the town: water covered parts of the roads, debris accumulated near the affected areas and municipal crews worked to restore circulation as quickly as possible, in a scene that, from my point of view, shows both the severity of the weather event and the response immediately deployed by the local authorities.
The runoff reached urban areas and the Provincial Route 7
The intense storm caused flooding in streets, homes and several sectors of Provincial Route 7. Water accumulation complicated vehicle circulation in different parts of Añelo, including Calle 24 and Bajada de las Patrias, which was closed to traffic for safety reasons, so drivers had to seek alternate routes while municipal teams continued working on the affected sectors.
According to the information provided by Añelo's Civil Defense director, Modesto Muñoz, the water descending from the hills carried mud, stones and debris toward the urbanized areas. On Provincial Route 7, near the access to Hotel Da Vinci, the flow eroded part of the shoulder and left a public lighting pole supported only by the electrical cable, without its usual support on the ground. That condition required attention because it represented a risk for people and traffic in the area.
“The local climate affected us with a storm. Although the entire team and the municipal group had been prepared since the previous day, all necessary precautions had been taken.”Modesto Muñoz, director of Civil Defense of Añelo
Muñoz explained that Añelo's geography favors the rapid runoff of water from higher areas toward the lower neighborhoods, which can increase the impact of heavy rainfall. The Municipal Administration deployed machinery from the Secretariat of Public Works and Services to clear flooded sectors and channel the drainage toward the irrigation canal, while the corresponding gates were closed, all in an effort to reduce the consequences of the accumulated water.
- Civil Defense assisted 25 families affected by the storm.
- Two people had to be evacuated.
- The Bajada de las Patrias access was closed to traffic for safety reasons.
- The Municipal Administration enabled the Community Hall, located at Calle 3 and Avenida Intendente Tanuz, as a refuge and assistance point.
- The community hall will remain open while the emergency continues.
The Social Development Secretariat assisted 25 families whose homes had been affected, while another two people were evacuated. For those who need shelter or support, the town enabled the Community Hall as a place to stay and receive assistance, and the Municipality clarified that it will remain open while the emergency lasts.
“The situation is currently under control and work is continuing.”Modesto Muñoz, director of Civil Defense of Añelo
Even with the situation described as controlled, the emergency response involved cleaning flooded roads, managing drainage and dealing with infrastructure damaged by the runoff. I understand that the immediate priority is to keep people safe and restore traffic, but residents who observe damage in their neighborhoods should report the situation to the local authorities so that the response can be coordinated, especially while the official emergency remains active.
